Liberty Worship Center (LWC) was organized August 1994 in the home of Pastor Julian Womack. The first service comprised of over 40 people who congregated in the basement area. The membership grew in numbers and the church moved into the Stone Mountain gym one year later. A few months went by and an opportunity presented itself to worship in another facility; a house next door to the Post Office in Lithonia. Pastor Womack and the men visited the house and realized that some changes would need to occur in order make the building church worthy. The necessary enhancements were made and the church worshipped in the new facility.
During these times, the Spirit of the Lord was with this group. One day, after observing what the Spirit of the Lord was doing in the church, Pastor Womack referred to the group as 'Liberty Worship Center' because they were free to worship the Lord in spirit and truth. The members all felt the connection in the Spirit and agreed this should be the church name; inspired by 2 Corinthians 3:17.
In 1996 Pastor Womack came across a house for sale in downtown Stone Mountain. He was indeed a visionary and recognized the potential for the property to be renovated and converted into a church building. The land would be purchased as an investment property because it was not large enough to accommodate the vision God had given Pastor Womack. This idea was presented to the congregation and there was a resounding 'yes, let's do it'. It was an amazing task-few people, little money, big vision, big God. Those who understood the Pastor's vision encouraged him, and in early 1997, Pastor Womack purchased the property on Main Street in Stone Mountain, which was fondly referred to as 'the little house on the prairie'. The process of reconstructing began right away. The congregation began to realize that Pastor Womack had gifts that they knew not of; this man was a genius.
Pastor Womack built from the ground up with just a little help from others, and the project was completed in 2000. Each time he ran into a challenge, God sent the right people to help him through. Those who watched from a distance said it couldn't be done, but our man of faith said it could if God was with us and with us God was. A beautiful 300 seat sanctuary was built, along with a 75 seat chapel, classrooms, and a kitchen, on ¾ of an acre of land.
In 2003, the Lord spoke to Pastor Womack. "It's time to move" said the Lord. "It was just an investment and I wanted to be sure you would follow wherever I lead." There were some who began to say 'What is wrong with this group called LWC, what is it they're trying to do, what do they think they're up to; they must have missed the voice of God'. But with faith as strong as Abraham's, Pastor Womack said "we will follow God". It took some time, but God revealed where He wanted LWC to be.
In September 2004, Pastor Womack met a gentleman by the name of Lamar Bowman. Mr. Bowman later said when he met Pastor Womack, he knew he couldn't sell his land to anyone else; he had to hold it for Pastor Womack. God confirmed that this land was the prerequisite to fulfill the vision and that it was adequate. Mr. Bowman held the property for some six months (with other offers being made) before LWC could sell the property on Main Street. On the 7th day of the third month (March) in the year 2005, LWC moved to its current location at 437 Hairston Way in Stone Mountain, GA. The Spirit of the Lord remains with LWC as we continue to move forward with the vision God has given us.
